Drenching Gold Standards

Oral is always best in young stock.

Giving drench orally means that the active ingredients are delivered directly to where the parasites are, and there is less variability due to absorption (like there is with injectable or pour on drenches).

Use triple combinations where possible.

This will help to slow the development of drench resistance.

Use a reliable drench gun and calibrate it before use.

To ensure you are giving the correct dose. Underdosing encourages resistance, and overdosing could be toxic.

Weigh a sample of the mob and always drench to the heaviest animal.

To ensure they are all receiving the correct dose of drench.

Ensure a minimum of 28 days between drenches.

To allow sufficient time in the worm life cycle for a refugia population.

Do not drench and shift to “clean” pasture.

Drench cannot be your sole parasite management plan.

Where possible use management practices to reduce your drench input such as cropping, cross species grazing, high grazing residuals and good overall animal health.
